Tasha’s Epic Quadrennial Olympics Analysis

Day 6

  • Yesterday was a busy day. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a great day for Team USA’s men’s artistic gymnastics. Neither Juda nor Richard reached the podium during the individual all-around—continuing a 12-year medal drought in this event.
  • Coco Gauff’s 2024 Olympics has come to an end after being eliminated from the women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles tournaments. She’s one of our favs and share in the disappointment.
  • I’m pretty sure I made this statement last Olympics, but I truly believe that equestrian dressage is just horse crip walking.
  • Adriana Ruano from Team Guatemala made Olympic history. Not only did she earn a gold medal in women’s trap shooting, but she also won Guatemala’s first gold medal ever, all while setting a new Olympic record in this event. Since 1952, when it first started competing in the Olympics, Team Guatemala has only won 3 medals, two of which have been won during these Olympic games.
  • There are 15 Olympic shooting events. Team USA hasn’t medaled in any of them during these Olympic games. I’m just gonna set that there for my 2A friends.
  • Back to my happy place—the aquatics center. Yesterday was the women’s 10m synchronized platform diving.
  • Since the women’s 10m synchronized platform diving event debuted in 2000, Team China has won it in every year. In total, Team China has won 50 Olympic diving gold medals, which is more than any other country and one more than Team USA.
  • Honestly, Team Korea should’ve been at the top of the podium in this event. I’ve yet to see two divers so in sync. They did win the silver medal in these Olympic games for this event, giving Team Korea its first ever diving medal.
  • My girl, Katie Ledecky won the women’s 1500m freestyle and set a new Olympic record in this event by finishing 10.33 seconds ahead of the silver medalist. Testament to her dominance: she holds the top 20 fastest times in this event.
  • The beau of the ball, however, was Team France’s Leon Marchand who won two gold medals in two hours—the first in the 200m butterfly and the second in the 200m breaststroke.
  • Surfing might be my new favorite sport or at least the one I’ll be obsessing about for now. I finally found a whole heat on Peacock so I could get a better feel for the sport.
  • So the first thing I observed is that you either get Colin Jost complaining about his injuries and not really adding to the commentary or you get the uncut footage with little to no commentary. There is no in between. Incidentally, choosing Colin Jost to cover surfing wasn’t the best choice NBC could’ve made for these Olympic games.
  • If you’re looking for a sport full of jam-packed action, surfing ain’t it. Most of the time, it’s just watching and listening to the waves, which is actually quite soothing.
  • But I did learn a few more things. First, surfers bring with them packs of surf boards called quivers.
  • A large part of the scoring is determined by how long you stay in the barrel of the wave. Also, your score depends on you not falling off the board.
  • Also, just like skaters, surfers have goofy feet too.
  • If there is ever any question, just know Mother Nature will always win. The waves were so brutal that they ripped the leash off the leg of one surfer and then snapped his board in half.
  • I was able to catch the women’s and men’s BMX freestyle finals. I wonder if the athletes have a set routine or if they just go for what feels right at the time. 🤔
  • Team Argentina’s Jose Torres won his country’s first gold medal at these Olympic games in this event.
  • This is just the second Olympics for 3×3 basketball. Did you know that the ball used in this event is the weight of a man’s basketball but dimensions of a woman’s basketball?
  • So far, it’s not looking good for Team USA (men or women) and I gotta say, I’m just not feeling this event like I was in 2020. It’s like pick-up ball but without the stylization of AND1 ball (not that it’s supposed to). I’d just like to see a little bit more je ne sais quoi added to this sport so that it significantly differentiates itself from 5×5 basketball.
  • Yesterday, the women’s triathletes were the first athletes that were required to swim in the Seine River. Has anyone checked on them today?
  • The trick to having a unique, stylized Olympics wardrobe like Snoop is to bring your own t-shirt press.
Finally, I’m just going to say this one time, so I need everyone to listen up…leave 👏🏽Simone 👏🏽and👏🏽 her 👏🏽edges👏🏽 alone! You never know; those straying pieces of hair might be the source of her greatness.
