See what had happened was, I had every and all intention of doing the work that pays me after I watched my stories but then I saw that the men’s finals in artistic gymnastics were on live.
So let’s talk about Stephen Nedoroscik and his cute Peter Parker looking self. He’s the perfect example of when you have one job, and you absolutely nail it. I don’t know if his team calls him this, but I’m nicknaming him “The Closer.”
It was an awesome effort by the whole team (did I mention 2 of them are Wolverines? Go Blue!) that earned them the bronze medal—the first medal for Team USA’s men’s artistic gymnastics in 16 years.
Fun fact: this is only the third medal in men’s artistic gymnastics Team USA has won over the course of 20 Olympic games.
I was yesterday year’s old when I found out Billie Jean King and Snoop graduated from the same high school, although not in the same year. Shout out to the LBC.
Yesterday was a day of firsts in the Olympic Aquatics Centre. Summer McIntosh won Team Canada’s first gold medal in these Olympic games during the women’s 400m individual medley. This comes after she won Team Canada’s first Olympic medal (silver) the day before in the women’s 400m freestyle.
David Popovici became Romania’s first man to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming as a result of winning the men’s 200m freestyle.
Team Ireland got its first medal of these Olympic games when Mona McSharry placed third in the women’s 100m breaststroke. Her win gave Team Ireland its first medal in swimming since the 1996 games.
Thomas Ceccon won Team Italy’s first ever gold medal in the men’s 100m breaststroke.
Just an aside: Am I the only one who thinks Team Australia’s swim coach, Dean Boxall, gives off major Spicoli vibes?
Platform diving scares the heck out of me. Every time someone jumps, I hold my breath until I see that they haven’t hit their head on the platform.
Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens’ bronze medal in men’s synchronized 10m platform diving won Team Canada’s first Olympic medal ever in this event and its first diving medal since 2008.
Just another aside: I really *REALLY* want one of Team USA’s white puffy coats that the swimmers wear.
I kept noticing that some skateboarders were referred to as “goofy.” It turns out, it has nothing to do with their demeanors. Rather, it signifies that they are left foot dominate. As you can see, skateboarding, like surfing, has its own language.
Regarding helmets, the IOC mandates helmets for skateboarders under the age of 18 to be worn. Since the average male skateboarder is about 5-10 years older than the average female skateboarder, that explains why they’re less likely to wear a helmet.
Olympic skateboarding is the only event where athletes are allowed to wear headphones and earbuds while competing.
I’ve almost got surfing figured out.
Last aside: Between Bob Costas and Mike Tirico, NBC needs to do better.
